Green Smoothie

Juicing and cleansing are all the craze these days. Are they really good for you??

Jucing is a great way to get your fruits and vegetables in, if you are unable to with normal eating. However, when you juice, you are getting rid of tons of fiber, vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for you (unless you use the scraps that come from the juicer). Fiber is super important to keeping you full between meals so that you do not overeat at the next.

What is a better option, you ask? Simply blending things!

What I made

GREEN SMOOTHIE:

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 banana (frozen–remove the peel the night before, throw in freezer)
  • 1/2 C frozen green grapes
  • 1/2 lime (peeled)
  • 1 C kale
  • 1/2 Granny Smith Apple
  • 1/2 C skim milk, almond milk or soy milk
  • 1 Tbsp ground flax seed

DIRECTIONS

  1. Throw all into the blender, and blend until smooth.

That’s it! No scraps to clean, simply wash the blender out when done.IMG_4717.JPG

Adding protein to your smoothies is very important. If you just have the fruit/vegetable juice, your body will metabolize this super quick and you will be hungry in no time. Here are some great protein sources, that aren’t powders, that are great for smoothies:

  • 1/4C slivered almonds
  • 1 Tbsp ground flax
  • 1/4 C non-fat yogurt
  • 1Tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/4 C walnuts
  • 1/4 C oats

What are some ideas that you use?
